The Power of Self-Reflection
The Power of Self-Reflection in Leadership Coaching
When I asked one of my latest clients how she found her leadership coaching experience with me, her response was unexpected but very much appreciated and understood by me: "It's been painful."
At first, this might seem like an unusual response. But as we talked further, she explained why. Through my prompting, questioning, and providing space for reflection, she had to spend time on herself—something she hadn’t done in a long time. She had been so focused on leading, supporting others, and managing responsibilities that she had neglected her own self-reflection and growth.
Why Do We Struggle to Focus on Ourselves?
How many of us are more than happy to dedicate time and energy to others but rarely turn that same focus inward? It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of work, family, and leadership, leaving little room for personal introspection. However, true leadership isn’t just about strategies, decisions, and outcomes—it’s about self-awareness, personal growth, and emotional intelligence.
Leadership coaching goes beyond skill development. It challenges individuals to dig deep, confront personal barriers, and acknowledge the areas that need attention. Often, this level of introspection is uncomfortable, even painful, because it forces us to face the truths we may have been avoiding.
Why Prioritising Yourself Is Essential
For many leaders—especially women—prioritising themselves feels uncomfortable, even indulgent. The idea of taking time for self-reflection or personal development often takes a backseat to meeting the needs of teams, clients, and family members. But the reality is that personal growth and self-awareness are essential for effective leadership.
When leaders take the time to reflect, they gain clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose. They become better decision-makers, communicators, and role models. My client, despite the initial discomfort, walked away from our coaching sessions feeling more empowered and in control of her leadership journey.
The Challenge: Invest in Yourself
So, when was the last time you truly invested time in yourself? When did you last step back from the daily grind to reflect on your own growth, goals, and aspirations? If you find yourself always prioritising others, maybe it’s time to turn the focus back on you.
Leadership isn’t just about guiding others—it’s also about leading yourself. And that starts with taking the time to reflect, learn, and grow.
